Wordpress.com (note the "dot com" and **not** the "dot org") is now offering free blogs based on the popular Wordpress software and the K2 template. I've read that the template is not very customizable, and one immediate drawback is that you must choose a third-level domain (i.e. myblog.wordpress.com), but this might be a good alternative to Blogger in terms of features and/or look-and-feel.

It's interesting you noted the fact that leaving comments on a blog sometimes requires a user account, and/or login, which is a hassle for some people, who just wish to leave a quick note. For new people starting a blog, it's important to consider how you want to handle visitors who wish to comment - do you want them to be able to comment without registration, or would you like them to register first?

Those are some things to consider.
